In contrast, the BBB that oversees the Maryland/DC/Pennsylvania
area has given Comcast, the nation's largest cable operator, a
grade of B+.
(Comcast is based in Philadelphia. National BBB grades are
awarded by the local BBB office where a company is based; a
company may also get grades for how their local offices perform.
For example, the Comcast office in Berlin, Connecticut has
received an F.)
Verizon has been given an A+ in New York, where it's
headquartered. The BBB In New York has also given Time Warner
Cable an A+
Cablevision has been given a grade of B in New York (its home)
while the
BBB in Colorado, where Dish Network is headquartered, gives Dish
a 'no rating' at this time. The BBB's site says a 'no rating'
could mean the organization is conducting a new review of the
company's policies.
DIRECTV has been criticized frequently in recent months on a
number of customer issues including early termination fees. The
State of Washington recently filed suit against the satcaster,
claiming
it has engaged in "deceptive
business practices."
At its web site, the BBB says an
F grade means that
"we strongly question the
company’s reliability for reasons such as that they have failed
to respond to complaints, their advertising is grossly
misleading, they are not in compliance with the law’s licensing
or registration requirements, their complaints contain
especially serious allegations, or the company’s industry is
known for its fraudulent business practices."
