Will DIRECTV Add HD Channels This Week?

Washington, D.C. (May 18, 2010) -- Boeing has announced that it has completed the 'handover' of the DIRECTV 12 satellite to DIRECTV, prompting speculation that the satcaster could begin adding more HD channels this week.

DIRECTV last December launched the satellite, which it says will give it the capacity to offer 200 HD channels. Since then, the satellite has been undergoing in-orbit testing, but Boeing says it's now ready to go.

"Boeing is proud to continue to delivery of highly capable satellite that enable DIRECTV to expand its channel offering," Boeing said in a statement.

DIRECTV has said it will launch 30 new HD channels over the next few months, beginning this month.

In related news, the satcaster said yesterday that it will expand its local HD channel offering to 16 new markets by year's end.
