DBSTalk.com, the message board favored by DIRECTV employees, is
buzzing with rumors that the satcaster will add Turner Classic
Movies in High-Definition sometime this month.
"Sixto," a frequent DBSTalk poster who is able to monitor
DIRECTV's testing of new and old channels, says the satcaster
has been testing TCM HD in recent days. Usually, if DIRECTV
begins testing a channel, it's getting ready to add it to its
lineup.
While the TCM rumor has not been confirmed, DBSTalk has often
been a place where DIRECTV employees and insiders drop a first
hint about an upcoming channel launch or other company
development.
DIRECTV has been slow to add basic cable channels in high-def,
although it did add AMC HD and E! HD in the past year.
Turner Classic Movies, which is owned by Turner Broadcasting,
features films that were originally released in the 1930s
through the 60s. However, the channels sometimes air movies made
in later decades.
The channel's high-def quality has been in dispute with some
critics charging that it's upconverted from standard-definition
rather than displayed in true HD.
