DIRECTV, Comcast Settle HD Lawsuit
The cable operator can still cite anti-satellite survey result.
By Swanni
That's according to an article by Multichannel News.
DIRECTV filed the lawsuit in May, charging Comcast with false advertising for an campaign that claimed it had a better HDTV picture than satellite.
Comcast cited a Frank N. Magid Associates study conducted in March 2007 that said respondents were shown high-def signals from Comcast, DIRECTV and EchoStar.and asked to rate each screen.
According to the Magid study, Comcast was the preferred choice of the three.
While the settlement terms are confidential, says Multichannel News, the agreement allows Comcast to continue to cite the Magid study in ads.
“We’re pleased that we’ve settled the outstanding litigation on a basis that is mutually satisfactory,” said Comcast spokeswoman Jenni Moyer.
After DIRECTV's filing in May, Comcast filed a countersuit against the satcaster, saying its ads were false for saying satellite had a better picture than cable.
It's unclear if the settlement will allow DIRECTV to keep running those ads, but DIRECTV spokesman Darris Gringeri told Multichannel News that the satcaster was "pleased" with the settlement result.
DIRECTV had previously settled two other lawsuits over HD picture quality ads with Cox and Time Warner.
