CES: Blu-ray Players In Almost
40M Homes

2012) -- The Digital
Entertainment Group said yesterday that Blu-ray players are now
in nearly 40 million homes and sales of Blu-ray titles reached
$2 billion in 2011.
The DEG, a trade group for entertainment and CE companies, added
that Blu-ray disc sales jumped 20 percent in 2011, compared to
2010. The home penetration number jumped about 38 percent in
2011.
Despite some tech analysts saying that streaming will soon
replace the disc, the DEG numbers suggest that Blu-ray could be
around for years to come and will soon the DVD player as
America's first choice in home video.
The DEG said the rise in Blu-ray spending was fueled by
increased HDTV sales. The trade group said 27 million high-def
sets were bought last year and that 74.5 million U.S. homes now
own at least one HDTV.
The top five Blu-ray titles in 2011 were: Harry Potter and the
Deatly Hallows, Part 1; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,
Part 2; Tangled; Cars 2; and Transformers: Dark of the Moon.
Those five discs collectively sold more than two million units.
