Despite some tech analysts saying that streaming will soon replace the disc, the DEG numbers suggest that Blu-ray could be around for years to come and will soon the DVD player as America's first choice in home video.

The DEG said the rise in Blu-ray spending was fueled by increased HDTV sales. The trade group said 27 million high-def sets were bought last year and that 74.5 million U.S. homes now own at least one HDTV.

The top five Blu-ray titles in 2011 were: Harry Potter and the Deatly Hallows, Part 1; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2; Tangled; Cars 2; and Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Those five discs collectively sold more than two million units.
