-- Dell says it will no longer place its brand on Plasma
HDTVs and instead will sell LCD sets.
In addition, the company will sell Sony-branded LCD sets at its web site, according to an article in the Austin American-Statesman. Dell is based in Round Rock, Texas, near Austin.
The newspaper reports that Dell will only sell company-branded LCDs that are 37 inches or less. Current Dell models HDTVs larger than 37 inches will be discontinued after they are sold, said company spokesman Dwayne Cox.
"This decision is consistent with our plan of action to focus investments on areas of the consumer business where we can provide the most value and have the highest return for our shareholders," Cox said in an e-mail to the American-Statesman.

Cox said Dell now believes that LCD technology "will be the better customer solution for the next generation of High-Definition content."
The spokesman may have been referring to 1080p which many LCDs can now display while most Plasma sets can not. However, Panasonic and Pioneer are expected to introduce new 1080p Plasma HDTVs this year.
Dell sells high-def sets at its web sites rather than at retail. But the company's market share has been rising, according to research groups. NPD Group tells the newspaper that more shoppers are now inclined to buy TVs online.
