DIRECTV: We've Fixed the HD DVR Glitch

Washington, D.C. (June 9, 2010) -- DIRECTV says a transmission glitch that caused an untold number of HD DVRs to freeze up yesterday has been fixed.

 "You may have experienced a transmission glitch to your DIRECTV service. DIRECTV has fixed the problem and automatically reset the receivers. There's nothing further that you need to do. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this technical issue has caused," DIRECTV said in an early Wednesday morning e-mail sent to subscribers.

The satcaster's customer service lines were flooded with calls on Tuesday morning when many HD DVR owners could not use their remotes or change channels. There were also reports that the DVR's guide data was corrupted, omitting channels and programs.

Many DIRECTV owners reported that they could not get through to a customer service rep during the snafu. The satcaster finally alerted subscribers at its Twitter site yesterday that re-setting the HD DVR twice was required for its to again operate normally. (DIRECTV's subsequent fix now should not require users to do a manual re-set.)

Some bloggers and Twitter page writers speculated that the freeze-up was caused either by a software update regarding DIRECTV's upcoming 3D channels or its new home network service, called DIRECTV Whole Home. The satellite service launched the Whole Home program on Monday.

However, DIRECTV did not specify what caused the transmission glitch.
