DIRECTV Cuts Sunday Ticket Price By 40 Percent
By Swanni
Washington, D.C.
(April 20, 2012)
-- DIRECTV is slashing the price of its NFL Sunday Ticket
package for current subscribers from $325 to $199, a 40 percent
reduction.
In addition, the satcaster will again offer the package for free
to new customers, a decision that last year helped DIRECTV add
roughly 450,000 new subscribers in the second half of the year.
(DIRECTV has had the exclusive rights to air the NFL Sunday
Ticket since its launch in 1994; the Ticket allows subscribers
to watch all Sunday regular season NFL games.)
For current subscribers, $199 is DIRECTV's lowest price for the
football package in more than a decade and it's part of an
effort to keep current subscribers from jumping to other TV
providers, particularly those who subscribed last year to get
the NFL Sunday Ticket for free.
"The
new package is designed to make DIRECTV's most popular sports
subscription service available to as many customers as possible
including those who experienced NFL SUNDAY TICKET for the first
time last year," DIRECTV said in a statement.
Bloomberg News estimates that between two and three million
DIRECTV customers subscribe to the NFL Sunday Ticket. The
satcaster has more than 19 million subs. What do you think? Offer
