DIRECTV Falls Short On '100 HD Channels' Pledge
The satcaster said last January that it would hit the 100 mark by year's end.

And during the year, company officials continued to boast that it would reach the "magic" 100 mark in 2007.
“There’s a magic to having a unique volume, which is why I think the 100 has been important to us,” DIRECTV CEO Chase Carey told TV Technology magazine last September. “It really resonates that you’ve got an incredibly rich HD experience.”
But yesterday, the first day of the new year, DIRECTV has about 87 national HD channels, according to its own count. The satcaster finished its high-def expansion for 2007 last Friday when it added Tennis Channel HD and College Sports Television HD.
At its web site, DIRECTV lists several HD channels that are coming soon, but they are not expected to be launched until later this year.
While DIRECTV did not meet its goal, the satcaster has still succeeded in becoming the clear leader in high-def programming, offering more channels than any other TV provider.
However, by failing to offer 100 HD channels by January 1, it could be subject to charges from the competition that it did not deliver on its promise.
