In other high-def issues, DIRECTV said today:
* The number of existing customers upgrading to a HD DVR in the second quarter was four times higher than during last year's second quarter.
* That it's rapidly decreasing the cost of manufacturing the HD DVR set-top.
"Between now and year's end, the HD DVR box cost will decrease about $100 per box. The HD box cost will reduce about $50 per box before year's end, and then in the first half of 2008, we’ll take another step down in those box costs," said Carey.
* HD subscribers rose 50 percent in the second quarter compared to last year's 2Q.
* That its Video on Demand service (via Broadband lines) will be launched "in the fall." DIRECTV earlier this year said it would be launched in July. The service is supposed to offer 2,000 movies and TV shows at launch, including high-def programming.
