Sony, Samsung: Stop Discounting Our HDTVs!

-- As threatened, Sony and Samsung are telling retailers that
they can't discount their new line of HDTVs, reports The Wall
Street Journal.
The move is designed to stop the trend of falling prices on
high-def sets that dates back several years. Both TV makers and
CE retailers have seen their profits decline as recession-weary
consumers have resisted buying new sets unless they are
discounted.
And without the discounts at retail, shoppers have gone online
to buy them at cheaper prices. This in turn has pressured the
retailers to lower prices even further.
Sony in particular has threaten to impose price restrictions in
recent months. But the move by the two TV makers is a big gamble
because consumers may decide not to buy at all, particularly if
the same restrictions are placed on online sellers such as Amazon.
In addition, some consumers may simply opt to buy a different
model such as Panasonic or Toshiba which currently are not
restricting discounting.
