Dish Launches Local HD In 2 More Markets
The satcaster now has local high-def in 57 cities.

Washington, D.C. (May 8, 2008) -- Dish Network today began broadcasting local HDTV channels in two new markets.

The new HD cities are: Hartford/New Haven, Connecticut and Portland/Auburn, Maine.

With the additions, Dish now provides HD locals in 57 markets, representing more than 66 percent of U.S. television households.

Dish did not reveal which local channels were added in either new market. Satellite and cable TV services sometimes do not offer all major broadcast networks in local high-def due to carriage disputes with the local
affiliates.

Dish Network, which now has 76 national HD channels, plans to offer 100 national HD channels and local HD channels in 100 markets by year's end. However, the satcaster's first of three satellites to expand its HD capacity has failed to reach its orbit; two more satellites are scheduled this year.
