Dish Network Launches New Satellite For HD
TVPredictions.com

Washington, D.C. (March 21, 2010) -- Dish Network yesterday launched a new satellite to enable it to expand its High-Definition programming lineup.

The satcaster says it now has more than 160 HD channels, but some are PPV channels and other services that do not offer programming 24 hours a day.

Still, Dish is thought to offer more high-def channels than any other TV provider, including DIRECTV which claims to have 130 HD channels.

Dish this morning said the successful launch of its latest satellite, the EchoStar XIV, would permit it to expand its HD lineup "to well over 200 channels."

The satcaster said the satellite was successfully released into geosynchronous transfer orbit during the morning.

Dish did not say when the new satellite would be operational, but it usually takes roughly 3-5 months. Dish CEO Charlie Ergen will not wait, however. He recently told his subscribers in a televised chat that Dish would add more HD channels next month.
