Washington, D.C.
(May 8, 2007) --
DIRECTV, which yesterday revealed it would add History Channel
HD in September, has said it will offer 100 national high-def
channels by year's end.
That announced list thus far comes to approximately 25 new high-def channels, which would be far less than what DIRECTV needs to get to the magic 100.
But worth noting: Discovery said this week that it will add six new high-def channels starting this fall. They are likely candidates to be added to the DIRECTV high-def lineup.

Other possible candidates: Trinity Broadcasting Network, which announced that it will launch a high-def channel in the fourth quarter of this year; and the high-def versions of such premium movie channels as Encore and The Movie Channel.
DIRECTV has not said when it will begin adding high-def channels in large numbers, but September seems likely assuming this summer's scheduled launch of a new satellite goes well.
The satcaster says it has already signed carriage agreements with 60-70 high-def networks for the upcoming expansion. DIRECTV now carries approximately 10 national HD channels.
The company also plans to boost its high-def lineup with HD coverage of various sports packages, including the NFL Sunday Ticket, NASCAR's HotPass and Major League Baseball's Extra Innings.
