DIRECTV to Add Universal Sports
By Swanni
Washington, D.C. (June 16, 2011)
-- DIRECTV has agreed to carry the NBC-operated Universal Sports
channel, starting in early August.
However, if you're looking for the satcaster to launch the
channel in high-def, you're out of luck, at least as of now.
Universal Sports, which features coverage of Olympic sports such
as track and field and figure skating, is not yet available in
HD.
Universal Sports, which is now available on digital sub channels
in numerous markets across the country, will be added to
DIRECTV's Sports Pack package by October 2011. However, the
satcaster will offer the channel as a free preview to all
subscribers in early August.
As part of the deal, DIRECTV will have the rights to carry
Universal Sports' programming on the Internet and mobile
devices. In addition, the companies said some rugby matches and
other events will be available to DIRECTV in 3D.
