DIRECTV Keeps 4 Local Stations For Now
By Swanni
Washington, D.C. (April 25, 2011) --
DIRECTV and Northwest
Broadcasting have agreed to another extension in their contract
renewal battle, according to the Spokesman-Review.
The extension will enable DIRECTV viewers to keep watching
Northwest-owned stations in
Binghamton, NY; Medford, OR;
Yakima, WA and Spokane, WA, all Fox affiliates. It's unclear how
long this extension will last, but it's not the first one in
this four month-long battle.
Northwest forced DIRECTV to remove the stations for the entire
month of January. Under federal law, a TV provider
can not carry a local station without its permission.
In
February, the sides agreed to a four-week cease-fire,
allowing the satcaster's
subscribers in three states to watch the Super Bowl -- and for
the two sides to keep negotiating a new deal.
The companies signed off on a new extension in March and now
another one here in April.
However, if a new pact is not signed soon, DIRECTV could be forced
to remove the Northwest-owned stations.
