"It's never an easy decision
to raise prices.
Unfortunately, the
increasing costs we pay to
carry the channels you see
sometimes force us to adjust
our prices. For several
years programming costs have
steadily outpaced the
average increase our
customers have seen on their
bills," DIRECTV says at its
web site.
DIRECTV is now involved in
negotiations with Hearst (30
local channels), Raycom (up
to 40 local channels) and
Comcast (The Golf Channel)
to carry their programming
beyond the end of the year.
The programming companies
are assumed to be asking for
more money for the right to
carry.
Like many of its rivals,
DIRECTV traditionally raises
programming package fees by
a small percentage at the
end of each year. Last
December, the satcaster sent
an e-mail to subscribers
notifying them of a four
percent increase starting in
February 2010.
