Will DIRECTV Add AMC HD Next Week?

By Swanni

Washington, D.C. (August 30, 2011) -- DBSTalk.com, the message board favored by DIRECTV employees, is buzzing with rumors that the satcaster will finally add a new basic cable channel in high-def on September 7.

While the rumors have not been confirmed, the web site has often been a place where DIRECTV employees and insiders drop a first hint about an upcoming channel launch or other company development.

Posters at the site who started the rumors are not saying which channel will be added, but there is widespread speculation (or perhaps just hope) that it will be either AMC HD or BBC America HD. Since DIRECTV stopped adding basic cable channels in high-def nearly two years ago, the satcaster has been flooded with demands for those two additions, among many others such as IFC, Turner Classic Movies and National Geographic Wild.

DIRECTV has stated recently that it believes that it offers the HD channels that people watch the most. But AMC, which features Emmy award winning shows such as Mad Men and Breaking Bad, is a large omission.

The satcaster may be reconsidering its basic cable HD policy in light of its recent second quarter financial report showing the satcaster had the smallest increase in net subscribers in its history. While DIRECTV has hit the brakes on adding basic cable in HD, many of its rivals have added AMC HD, BBC America HD, National Geographic Wild in recent months, possibly prompting some DIRECTV subscribers to switch providers.

Of course, DIRECTV may simply be getting ready to add TruTV HD, the high-def edition of the true crime channel. The satcaster announced last spring that it would eventually add TruTV in high-def in return for the rights to air certain games in the college basketball tournament, known as March Madness. DIRECTV has not revealed a launch date for TruTV HD, except to say it would be this year.

Also possible: The DBSTalk rumors are just that -- rumors.
