CES: DIRECTV, Samsung Team For Boxless Viewing
By Swanni

Las Vegas (January 10, 2012) -- DIRECTV and Samsung today unveiled a new feature that will enable DIRECTV subscribers to watch live and recorded programs from a compatible DIRECTV HD DVR on Samsung's 2012 line of Smart TVs -- without the need of an additional set-top.

The service will allow DIRECTV viewers to watch their favorite shows in any room without installing additional DVRs, although you will need that new Samsung Smart TV in each room you plan to watch. The new Smart TVs will be available this spring.

"Many homes today have more than one TV to cater to the different needs of everyone in the family. By working with a leading provider like DIRECTV, we're able to offer consumers enhanced convenience in access so they can enjoy the content they desire from any room in the home, any time they choose," said Stephen Goldstein, vice president of Samsung Electronics America.

The Samsung Smart TV will include the
standardized Remote User Interface (RUI) technology which enables the set to display the programming and user interface from a DIRECTV HR34 Home Media Center HD DVR.

While watching the Samsung set, DIRECTV subscribers will be able to use all of the HD DVR features, including live pause, picture-in-picture and the ability to record up to five shows at once.

"Making DIRECTV features and content available on Samsung TVs through the RVU server allows consumers to enjoy our innovative service without the need for additional set-top boxes," said Romulo Pontual, DIRECTV's chief technology officer..
