DIRECTV Airs Fox Sports San Diego In HD
By Swanni
Washington, D.C.
(March 18, 2012)
-- DIRECTV last night aired the first San Diego Padres game
broadcast by the new Fox Sports San Diego channel in
High-Definition.
However, UTSanDiego.com reports that the sports channel tweeted
last night that DIRECTV will only carry its live games, not
other programming such as studio shows and documentaries. That
essentially makes Fox Sports San Diego a part-time channel on
the satcaster's lineup. (DIRECTV aired the live game last night
on channel 694-1.)
But it was not clear until last night if DIRECTV would add the
channel in high-def. Sports Business Journal reported a few
weeks ago that
DIRECTV will soon add the
regional sports channel, but did not report whether it would be
in SD or HD.
Fox Sports San Diego recently signed a 20-year contract to
broadcast the Padres games. Previously, the Cox
Communications-owned Channel 4 in the San Diego area had the
rights to the Padres.
Over the years, Cox refused to
offer the games to other TV providers except for Time Warner
Cable, which does not compete directly with Cox. But now DIRECTV
subscribers will get to see the Padres on Fox Sports San Diego -
and in high-def.
UTSanDiego.com also reported that Cox, which has the rights to
the channel as well, did not carry the Padres in high-def last
night. Time Warner, Dish and AT&T, which also serves the greater
San Diego area, has yet to sign a programming pact with the new
channel.
