--
DIRECTV has launched a subscriber-only streaming
service at its web site which offers movies and TV shows that
can be viewed instantly over the Internet in and outside the
home.
The
page,
which allows subscribers to instantly watch programs on TV,
tablets, smart phones and laptops, includes new video releases
such as Contraband and Happy Feet Two as well as content from
premium networks such as HBO, Starz, Cinemax and Encore. Shows
from DIRECTV's own Audience Network and the Sony Movie Channel
are also available.
To watch the programs via streaming, subscribers must install
the free DIRECTV Player on their laptops or a DIRECTV app on the
tablet or smart phone. (No Internet connection to your DIRECTV
HD DVR is needed.) Many of the programs require a fee under $5
for viewing, but subscribers to the premium networks can watch
their shows for no additional charge.
TVPredictions.com
reported last February
that DIRECTV was planning to launch the streaming service at its
web site. Patrick Doyle, the satcaster's CFO, said at an
industry conference that his company would likely expand the
offering at some point so it would be similar to Comcast's new
Streampix plan. The cable operator charges a monthly fee for
streaming, although it's free to upper-tier subscribers.
"We think that's an opportunity,"
Doyle said when asked at an industry conference about the
Comcast service.
