Washington, D.C. (Nov. 3,
2011) -- DIRECTV added a whopping
327,000 net subscribers in the third quarter thanks in large
part to a new NFL Sunday Ticket promotion.
For the first time, the satcaster gave away the NFL pay package
for free to new subscribers who agreed to a two-year contract.
The package, which includes every Sunday NFL game in HD and SD,
normally costs roughly $300 for the entire season.
The promotion, which helped add twice as many net subscribers as
estimated by Wall Street analysts, pushed DIRECTV's overall sub
total to 19.8 million and enabled the satcaster to report today
a 7.7 percent increase in third quarter profit.
Additionally, DIRECTV's net income jumped to $516 million from
$479 in the previous year's third quarter.
The satcaster said the average revenue per subscriber was $92.91
a month, an increase of 3.6 percent from a year ago.
The third quarter boom in subscriber is in sharp contrast to the
second quarter when DIRECTV added just 26,000 subscribers, a
record low for the satcaster.
