Bull Riders Tell Fans to Dump DIRECTV
TVPredictions.com

Washington, D.C. (October 11, 2009) -- The Professional Bull Riders has told its fans in an e-mail that they should dump DIRECTV and sign up with satellite rival Dish Network, according to Sports Business Journal.

The group is upset with the nation's largest satcaster because it dropped Versus on August 31 after failing to reach a programming deal with the Comcast-owned sports channel. Versus airs a number of professional sports, including Professional Bull Rider events. (DIRECTV dropped both the standard-def and high-def versions of Versus.)

“Unlike DIRECTV, Dish Network respects your passion," PBR CEO Randy Bernard said in the e-mail, noting that Dish carries Versus and has agreed to sponsor the group's tour through 2010. The satcaster is also offering a free preview of Versus through the end of November.

Bernard is concerned because the group's World Finals start on October 30 and it appears that DIRECTV subscribers will not be able to watch them on Versus.

Sports Business Journal reports that Bernard's e-mail was sent to 250,000 fans registered in the group's database.

“In my 15 years with PBR, this is the issue we’ve got the most calls and emails on,” said Bernard. “There’s not even a close second.”

DIRECTV is also under fire from the satcaster's hockey fans who are missing Versus' coverage of the National Hockey League.

Bernard says he doesn't think the DIRECTV-Versus dispute will end anytime soon.

“We tried to stay out of this as long as we could,” Bernard said in the e-mail. “We didn’t want to burn any bridges and we thought it would fix itself. But in the end we had to do what was right for the PBR and our fans...I think it (the DIRECTV-Versus argument) will be a long, drawn-out process."
