The ViP 722 is a dual tuner recorder that can power two rooms at the same time -- one in HD and the other in standard definition.
The 55-hour HD storage capacity is an upgrade over the satcaster's ViP 622, which can store 35 hours of HD programming.
The ViP can also store 350 hours of standard-def programming and more than 100 hours of movies and shows on the Dish On Demand service.
The set-top also supports Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound and, like the ViP 622, it has a 30-second skip feature so viewers can watch recorded shows minus the commercials.
The satcaster this week also enabled a new feature that allows HD DVR owners to store extra HD programming on external USB hard drives.
The USB hard drives must be purchased separately but the ViP 622 and the ViP 722 will be free to new subscribers. (USB hard drives start at less than $200; EchoStar's HD DVRs are compatible with USB hard drives up to 750 GB.)
EchoStar this week also added six new high-def channels, which were previously announced, giving it a total of 38 national HD networks.
