The poll was commissioned by the Consumer Electronics Association, which opposes the proposal from the California Energy Commission.
The CEC proposal is designed to limit energy consumption from new sets such as Plasma and LCD HDTVs. Studies have shown that Plasma sets consume significantly more energy than the old tube TV. The LCD set also consumes more energy, but not as much as the Plasma.
Plasma's high energy usage has raised concerns in several European countries as well as in California.

The CEA, a trade group which
represents TV makers, says the CEC
proposal would ban the sale in
California of 25 percent of current
big-screen HDTVs and 100 percent of
Plasma sets larger than 60 inches.
The trade group says it would also
cost California $50 million a year
in lost tax revenue and eliminate
4,600 jobs.
The online Zogby poll questioned 800
California residents.
