Washington, D.C.
(May 5, 2007) --
Over the last several years, I have written extensively about
the incredible High-Definition picture. The high-def image is so
clear and detailed that watching it is like looking through a
window.
I have even published my picks for the 20 Best Shows in HDTV.
However, it's time to blow the whistle and tell the world that not all high-def looks, well, incredible. In fact, some "HDTV" shows look downright horrible.

It's not the technology's fault. It's the fault of people -- the people who produce and direct the shows. They are using blurry camera filters, blinding stark lighting and other tricks of the trade to erase the clarity and detail of the high-def picture.
Often, the picture is deliberately corrupted to soothe the egos of on-air talent who are concerned about looking older or just less than ideal in high-def. However, sometimes, the director or producer purposely displays a less detailed picture for what they believe are sound esthetic reasons.
But for the high-def owner, who expects only the best picture for his/her sizable investment, it adds up to a major disappointment.
