Peter Gammons: Nats Talking to John Garland

By Swanni

Washington, D.C. (December 7, 2009) -- ESPN's Peter Gammons is reporting that the  Washington Nationals are talking to free agent right-hander Jon Garland.

The news comes as general managers and other team executives prepare to convene the 2009 Winter Meetings today in Indianapolis. In his blog at ESPN.com, Gammons did not say if the Nats and Garland are involved in serious negotiations, but the team's interest in starting pitching in well known.

Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal wrote last week that the Nats may be interested in free agent veteran righthander John Smoltz as well. And there have also been reports that the team could be talking to Atlanta about a possible trade for either Derek Lowe or Javy Vasquez.

Nationals: They have the best prospect in the game in No. 1 draft pick Stephen Strasburg, plus solid talents in catcher Derek Norris, right-hander Drew Storen and shortstop Danny Espinosa. Beyond that, though, the Nats have very little help, especially at the upper levels, which is a pity considering the state of the big-league roster.

Garland, who finished the 2009 season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, was not offered arbitration, meaning the Nats would not be required to give up any draft picks if he was signed.

The 30-year-old righthander was 11-13 last year, splitting time with the Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondback. He is known as an 'innings-eater,' something who routinely pitches around 200 innings every season.
