Washington, D.C.
(February 9, 2007)
-- High-Definition TVs will be in 151 million homes
worldwide by 2011, according to a new report from
Informa Telecoms and Media.
The British-based research group estimates that global high-def penetration stood at 48 million homes at the end of 2006. Approximately 1.2 billion households worldwide have a television.
Informa says 58 percent of current high-def homes are in the United States with 20 percent in Japan. But falling prices will persuade millions more to get HDTVs over the next several years.

"The falling price of high-definition sets has really caught the public's imagination, and consumer uptake is impressive," said Informa's Adam Thomas, according to Reuters.
But Thomas added that many consumers still believe there isn't enough high-def programming to justify the purchase. But he noted that TV providers are expanding high-def lineups across the globe.
