Hitachi to Drop Rear Projection HDTVs
The company will focus on flat-panel sets.
By Phillip Swann

Washington, D.C. (June 27, 2007) -- Hitachi says it will no longer sell rear projection High-Definition TVs in the consumer marketplace.

That's according to an article by TWICE magazine.

Hitachi has long been associated with the rear projection TV, but the company says it will focus now on flat-panel sets. The decision is more evidence of the growing popularity of flat-screen LCD and Plasma sets.

With that in mind, TWICE reports that Hitachi this week unveiled a new line of flat-panel sets, which include three  Plasma HDTVs that use the company's "Reel60" 60Hz frame-rate technology.

Bill Whalen, Hitachi's director of product development, told TWICE that Reel60 will deliver more fluid natural motion on screen by using "motion vector interpolation" to convert 24fps images into two interlaced section of 60 fps material.

Whalen said a Plasma set with Reel60 will have an edge over LCD sets which sometimes have difficulty displaying rapid motion.

The company this year will introduce 14 flat-panel sets: 10 Plasmas and four LCDs. Daniel Lee, Hitachi's marketing vice president, tells TWICE that the LCD TVs are for retailers who have requested them.

The Hitachi 60-inch Plasma Reel60 (model:
P60X901) will carry a suggested retail price of $7,999 while the 50-inch Plasma Reel60 (model: P50X901) will be priced at $4,299. Both sets will ship in August and be available only in specialty stores, TWICE reports.

Hitachi will also introduce a 50-inch Reel60 (model: P50V701), which will retail for $3,999.
