DIRECTV Gets Hitchcock 2 Weeks Before Blu-ray

By Swanni

Washington, D.C. (February 21, 2013) -- 20th Century Fox has quietly allowed pay TV providers such as DIRECTV to air the Anthony Hopkins film Hitchcock two weeks prior to its release on DVD and Blu-ray high-def disc.

In the past year or so, many new releases have been made available on pay TV's Video on Demand services on the same day they were released on disc. When the same-day practice started, sellers of DVDs and Blu-ray discs howled, saying consumers wouldn't pay $20 or more for a disc when they could rent the film for around $5 at home.

But the release of Hitchcock on pay TV a full two weeks prior to the Blu-ray/DVD combo release will further test consumer's loyalty to the hard disc. The suggested price for the Blu-ray/DVD combo package for Hitchcock is $39, although
Amazon is taking pre-orders for $33.99.

DIRECTV and Comcast, among other TV providers, added Hitchcock to its VOD lineup this week; the film won't be available on Blu-ray and DVD until March 12. Comcast is charging $5.99 per order for an HD showing of Hitchcock while DIRECTV is charging $6.99 for a 1080p HD edition.

While not a box office smash (it's made roughly $6 million), Hitchcock, which was released in 2012, is considered an A-list film with a cast that includes Hopkins, Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Biel and Helen Mirren. The movie chronicles the director's struggle to make the film, Psycho, and his relationship with his longtime partner and wife, played by Mirren.
