Senator to TV Providers: Stop
Being Hogs
By Swanni
Washington, D.C. (September 14,
2011) -- Sen. Dianne Feinstein,
D-California, has sent a letter to the nation's top cable, telco
and satellite operators that urges them to phase-out
'energy-inefficient' set-top boxes. If they don't, she adds, the
federal government may require them to do so.
The letter, which went to the CEOs of 15 TV providers including
DIRECTV, Dish Network, Comcast, Cox, Time Warner Cable, Verizon,
AT&T and Charter Communications, says the set-tops do not have
'sleep modes' so they are always operating even when turned off,
which can spike a consumer's monthly energy bill.
Feinstein estimates that the boxes are responsible for an extra
$3 billion in utility bills every year with $2 billion coming
when they are not actively in use.
The National Resources
Defense Council has said that DVRs, cable boxes and other
set-tops are the number one home energy hog, costing U.S.
consumers $3 billion a year in electric bills.
The NRDC says two-thirds of the set-top consumption comes when
they're not on and that a HD DVR can consume roughly 40 percent
more power than any other TV set-top.
“Set-top
boxes are the ultimate home energy vampires,
silently sucking significant amounts of
energy and money when nobody’s using them,”
the NRDC said in a statement. “The consumer,
who pays the electric bill, deserves
technologies without hidden costs. At a time
when everyone is trying to cut waste from
our budgets and electric grid, service
providers shouldn't saddle their subscribers
with boxes that unnecessarily squeeze their
wallets.”
Feinstein notes in her letter that Sky
Broadcasting in Great Britain uses a DVR
that reduces its energy consumption in the
late night and early morning hours. She
urges the U.S. TV providers to work together
to manufacture a similar energy-efficient
set-top. If not, she warns, the federal
government may step in to require it.
