Washington, D.C.
(February 19, 2007)
-- DIRECTV's HotPass, which allows viewers to follow
five NASCAR drivers each week, will be offered in
High-Definition next year, TVPredictions.com has
learned.
The HotPass feature debuted yesterday with the Daytona 500, the first race in NASCAR's 37-race season. The service includes a special channel for each of the five drivers, including real-time statistics and individual cameras.
DIRECTV is scheduled to expand high-def capacity later this year with the launch of at least one new satellite. This will enable it to offer the HotPass service in HD for the 2008 NASCAR season.

However, even with the additional capacity, the HotPass high-def coverage will be costly and time-consuming to implement.

It is unclear if DIRECTV will charge extra for the HDTV HotPass, as it now does for high-def games available via its NFL Sunday Ticket football package.
The satcaster is charging $99 for the 2007 HotPass package, although yesterday's Daytona coverage was free.
