Washington, D.C. (August 28,
2006)
-- The University of Texas last season had the biggest and
baddest college football team in the nation. And now it appears
that the team has the biggest and baddest High-Definition TV
screen in the world.
University officials have just unveiled the new scoreboard at
Royal Memorial Stadium, home of the defending national
champions, and it includes a high-def display 55 feet tall and
134 feet wide.
The Associated Press reports that the screen is nearly as wide
as the football field itself. University officials call it the
largest high-def display board in the world.
The players just call it, "Godzillatron."
"The guys are talking about
trying to hook up an XBox to play games," Texas defensive end
Tim Crowder said.

The $8 million scoreboard and HD display was built by Daktronics
Inc., based in South Dakota. AP writes that the University of
Texas had to upgrade its utility facilities to supply the
display with enough energy.
University officials say they've been told that a larger HD
display will soon be installed in Asia. But for now, they say,
it's number one.
Just like last season's University of Texas football team, which
defeated USC in the national championship game.
