In a new review just posted at the technology web site, CNET says the LG 50PC5D is relatively inexpensive with a suggested retail price of $2299 (even less at ecommerce sites.), delivers a "deep level" of black color and a "solid" standard-definition picture.
But the web site adds that the flat-panel HDTV suffers from an "inaccurate primary color of green; inadequate color temperature controls (and) subpar PC performance via VGA."
Overall, CNET rates the set as "good," which falls below other comparably sized sets such as Panasonic's 50-inch models.
"The LG 50PC5D suffers a few picture quality faults compared to the best 50-inch plasmas, but its aggressive price and solid black levels really increase its appeal," the review states.
CNET tested the set's picture performance by watching a Blu-ray high-def disc of The Sentinel, which stars Michael Douglas.
The web site says the LG produced a "deeper color of black" than Pioneer's PRO-FHD1 50-inch Plasma set, which carries a higher retail price. But it adds that LG's detail in shadows "lagged a bit" behind both the Pioneer and the Panasonic TH-50PH9UK 50-inch Plasma.
"The lapels of Michael Douglas' dark suit, for example, blended into the shadows a bit more quickly during a chat with a subordinate," the site said. (But) overall black level performance was quite good."
However, CNET said the set delivered an inaccurate primary color of green, "which made shots of trees and grass around Washington DC appear a bit more yellow than (other sets)."
