-- LG's new HDTV DVD player that can display both Blu-ray
and HD-DVDs delivers an excellent image but may be too
expensive for most consumers.
That's the conclusion of a new review by CNET.com, which gives the player a score of 7 out of a possible 10.
The LG Super Multi Blue Player (Model: BH100) dual-format player is now available at Circuit City, Best Buy and other retailers for approximately $1199. The set-top is designed to appeal to high-def owners who are worried about picking a loser in the format war.
The Blu-ray and HD-DVD formats are not compatible, meaning one DVD won't play on the other's machine. This has led to concerns that one format will go out of business, leaving consumers holding an obsolete player.
LG's dual-format player, however, would continue to be useful because it could play either format.

CNET writes that the LG BH100 delivers an "excellent image quality" for both formats; has an "attractive design with touch-sensitive buttons (and a) quick response during scans and chapter skips."

On the down side, the technology web site says it's expensive; offers no CD playback; does not support the interactive features of HD-DVDs; and its upscaling of standard DVDs is below the performance of some competitors.
Overall, CNET says that despite the excellent image quality, the player's "variety of quirks and missing features limits its appeal."
