Would You Like Netflix In Your Hotel Room?
By Phillip Swann

Washington, D.C. (January 20, 2015) - Marriott is now offering Netflix and other streaming services such as Pandora and Hulu on in-room televisions in eight hotels, according to Bloomberg News.

The wire service says Marriott is testing the streaming feature and could expand it to more hotels if successful. In addition, Bloomberg writes that other lodging chains are considering launching similar streaming services.

The hoteliers are hopeful that Netflix, which now has nearly 40 million streaming subs in the U.S.,
will improve the in-room entertainment experience and attract frequent travelers. Guests have long watched their favorite streamers on laptops and other devices, but the Marriott feature allows you to watch them on the larger-screen TV.

Th
e Bloomberg article does say which Marriott hotels are now offering the streaming services, but quotes a company spokesman as saying "we are currently offering guests in eight test hotels the opportunity to stream their content through our High-Definition TVs, whether it's Netflix, Hulu or Pandora."

Marriott did not say how much it would charge for the streaming service, or whether it would add a fee for guests to access their individual Netflix, Hulu or Pandora accounts.

However, it would be not be surprising for the hotel chain, or other hoteliers, to impose some fee tied to the in-room Wi-Fi service. For years, hoteliers have attempted to expand their in-room entertainment revenue, adding such TV features as video games, first-run theatrical films and and Internet access.

In other streaming news, Amazon has announced that it will produce and distribute original movies in theaters with the intent to show them later on its Amazon Prime streaming service.
