Met Opera Expands HD Broadcasts
The productions can be seen in movie theaters.
By Allison Moore
The Met: Live in HD launched a year ago to sold-out theaters across the country. The organization says the high-def broadcasts will be available in 800 different venues in 17 countries this season, including cruise ships.
The Met transmits a high-def feed of a live production directly to the theaters and ships.
This year's schedule will begin with the Met’s Opening Night Gala celebration, starring soprano Renée Fleming, on September 22.
The new series will also feature live transmissions of five new productions, including one Met premiere. The Opening Night transmission will be seen in North America only, but the remaining ten High-Definition productions will be shown worldwide on Saturdays through May 9, 2009.
The Met estimates that 900,000 people will have seen this year's high-def broadcasts when the season concludes.
