Microsoft & Sony Still Battling Over Blu-ray
TVPredictions.com

Washington, D.C. (March 17, 2010) -- It appears that Microsoft and Sony are still at war over Blu-ray.

Microsoft was an enthusiastic supporter of HD DVD, the high-def disc rival to Sony's Blu-ray. But Toshiba, the main backer of HD DVD, pulled the plug on the format in early 2008.

But Microsoft hasn't left the jungle; Aaron Greenberg, Microsoft's director of product management, has told Edge Magazine that Sony's decision to include a Blu-ray player in its Play Station 3 has hurt sales of the gaming console.

Microsoft does not offer a high-def player in its XBox 360 console, which the company claims has allowed it to keep prices low.

"
The fact that we're able to offer a console starting at $199 is a benefit of not being burdened with that cost," Greenberg said. "Being $100 cheaper is part of the reason why we're nearly twice (Sony's) installed base."

Instead of a device that plays high-def discs, Microsoft's XBox 360 offers a digital download service that include HD movies and TV shows. Sony also offers digital downloads, but the company believes that the Blu-ray player has helped both sales of the PS3 and Blu-ray products.

While the PS3 still trails the XBox in sales, the gaming console has increased its market penetration in the last year after cutting its basic player to $299.

Additionally, industry observers agree that Sony's decision to include the Blu-ray player in the PS3 was a significant contributor to Blu-ray's victory over HD DVD.

Industry observers have also wondered if Microsoft would eventually seek peace and adopt the Blu-ray format for its products. (Toshiba has even introduced a Blu-ray player.)

But Greenberg's recent comments would suggest the answer is no.
