Instead of a device that plays high-def
discs, Microsoft's XBox 360 offers a digital download service
that include HD movies and TV shows. Sony also offers digital
downloads, but the company believes that the Blu-ray player has
helped both sales of the PS3 and Blu-ray products.
While the PS3 still trails the XBox in sales, the gaming console
has increased its market penetration in the last year after
cutting its basic player to $299.
Additionally, industry observers agree that Sony's decision to
include the Blu-ray player in the PS3 was a significant
contributor to Blu-ray's victory over HD DVD.
Industry observers have also wondered if Microsoft would
eventually seek peace and adopt the Blu-ray format for its
products. (Toshiba has even introduced a Blu-ray player.)
But Greenberg's recent comments would suggest the answer is no.
