The legendary artist made his announcement at a Sun Microsystems conference in San Francisco, according to the Associated Press which noted that Young's decision suggests the new format is making gains with the music industry as well as Hollywood studios.
Blu-ray discs can hold more data than a standard CD or DVD and they can be updated over the Internet, which means a musician could store a musical collection on a new disc and then later add to it with a new song release.
Young said his first 10-disc Blu-ray collection will include his music and videos from 1963 to 1972 and will be released this fall under the Reprise/Warner Bros. label.
According to the AP, Young said the Blu-ray collection will include some songs and videos previously unreleased as well as some collector items.
The musician said he's excited that a Blu-ray disc allows fans to search online while still listening to a song.
"Previous technology required unacceptable quality compromises," Young said, according to AP. "I am glad we waited and got it right."
