HDTV Review: Oppo's 1080p DVD Player
CNET gives the "upconverter" a score of 8.3 out of a possible 10.
By Phillip Swann

Washington, D.C. (February 9, 2007) -- Oppo has introduced several new DVD players that promise to "upconvert" your standard DVDs so they will display near high-def images on a High-Definition set. The devices have generated strong praise from journalists and users alike.

But the company has taken on its biggest challenge with its new DV--981HD player that it says will display near 1080p high-def pictures on a 1080p set.

The verdict? According to a new review by CNET.com, the player gets a score of 8.3 out of a possible 10.

The technology web site says the DV-981HD, which retails for $230, provides "excellent image quality," upscaling to 1080p via a HDMI cable which comes with the player.

Oppo's new 1080p upconverter is now available.

While the site notes that the 1080p feature will only work on a HDMI connection on a 1080p HDTV, it says the Oppo player performs "nearly as well as players costing four times the price."

"The
Oppo DV-981HD is an unbeatable bargain for videophiles and enthusiasts," CNET concludes.

The DVD player is likely to appeal to high-def owners who are reluctant to buy a new Blu-ray or HD-DVD HDTV DVD player which can display high-def images without upconverting. Many consumers are concerned that the format war will eventually leave them holding an obsolete machine.

However, CNET cautions that while upconverters can dramatically improve a standard DVD picture, it will not achieve full high-def quality.

"Despite some of the marketing hype espousing that they'll make your DVDs appear in HD picture quality, the increase in picture quality will never comes close to matching that of HDTV, and the increase is also completely dependent on how good the upscaling technology in your TV already is," the site notes.
