That's the conclusion of a review by CNET.com.
The technology web site says the Oppo DV-970HD, which retails for around $149, will upconvert standard definition DVDs to 720p and 1080i HD output via a HDMI connection. (The HDMI cable is included with the set-top.) CNET says the Oppo player delivers an "excellent image quality."
On the negative side, CNET says the set-top's design leaves much to be desired. "The low-end look and feel bespeak its cheap price tag," the site says.
However, overall, CNET gives the Oppo player a score of 7.7 out of a possible 10.
"The Oppo DV-970HD delivers some of the best value for your DVD dollar that we've seen on upconverting players in terms of features and performance," the site's review states.

CNET notes that standard DVD players can be found for as little as $30 these days, but the site says "anyone who's serious about image quality and performance needs to spend more."
The web site tested the standard definition DVD of Serenity and found that the Oppo player delivered a picture as good as a $850 Denon DVD player.
"Resolution tests were detailed and stable, rotating lines suffered only a little distortion," the site stated.
