Panasonic: We've Sold Out Our 3-D HDTVs
TVPredictions.com

Washington, D.C. (March 17, 2010) -- Panasonic says it sold out its supply of 3-D HDTVs in U.S. stores during the first week of sale, according to Business Week.

However, the TV maker would not reveal how many sets were sold.

Still, a Panasonic official tells Business Week that the company is now taking 'back-orders' from retailers. "
It’s a great opportunity to turn around our TV business,” he said.

Panasonic and other TV manufacturers are hoping that the 3-D set revitalizes the business in the coming years. However, the lack of 3-D content and the higher cost of the sets and 3-D goggles all provide serious obstacles to its success.

Through a marketing partnership, Panasonic was selling a 3-D bundle at Best Buy consisting of a 50-inch set, goggles and 3-D Blu-ray player for $2,899.

Comcast this week announced that it would offer The Masters golf tournament in 3-D next month, a first for a U.S. TV provider. DIRECTV plans to launch three 3-D channels in June and the studios are expected to begin offering 3-D Blu-ray discs starting next month.

Samsung, which has also introduced 3-D sets, told Business Week that it has not yet tracked its sales numbers.
