HDTV Review: CNET Can't Recommend Panasonic Blu-ray Player
The web site praises the picture but bashes the price.
By Phillip Swann

Washington, D.C. (December 15, 2006) -- Panasonic's new Blu-ray HDTV DVD player has a great picture, but a not-so-great price.

That's the conclusion of a new review published by CNET.com.

The technology web site says the Panasonic
DMP-BD10 Blu-ray player delivers "excellent picture quality" on both Blu-ray and standard DVDs. The device can "upconvert" a standard DVD to near high-def quality.

CNET also likes the player's "sleek design" and its diverse connections, including a HDMI output.

But noting the player's retail price of $1,299 -- $300 more than most other Blu-ray players -- the site says it's too expensive to recommend.

CNET also criticizes the device's slow load times and what it calls a "terrible remote...The bottom half of the remote is distinguished by its combination directional pad/scrollwheel, which we really couldn't stand using."

The bottom line, says CNET: "The Panasonic DMP-BD10 is a very competent first-generation Blu-ray player, but its high price and the comparably affordable PlayStation 3 (starting at $499) make it hard to recommend."
