HDTV Review: Philips' Blu-ray Player 'Too Expensive'
But CNET says the high-def DVD player offers a great picture.
By Phillip Swann

Washington, D.C. (December 20, 2006) -- Looking for a HDTV picture that delivers a big spoonful of snap, crackle and pop?

Well, Philips' new Blu-ray BDP9000 will brighten your day with a brilliant image whether you watch Blu-ray movies or standard DVDs. However, with a retail price of $999, the new player is far too expensive to recommend.

That's the conclusion of a new review posted by CNET.

The technology web site raves about the player's "slick design and excellent picture quality." It even likes Philips' remote control, a rare endorsement in tech reviews.

But considering the price, CNET wonders why anyone would buy the Philips player when you can get a PlayStation 3 (with a Blu-ray player inside) for as little as $499.

"Philips BDP9000 has some great design touches and excellent Blu-ray image quality, but its high price, less-comprehensive audio capabilities and the comparative affordability of the PlayStation 3 suggest that you should probably hold off," CNET says.

Overall, CNET gives the Philips BDP9000 a score of 6.3 out of a possible 10.

However, it should be noted that the PS3 is still in limited supply and the Philips Blu-ray player can be found for less than $900 at some web sites.

One last point: CNET says the Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-ray player "had a slight edge on the Philips BD9000 in terms of sharpness. But the difference is so slight that we wouldn't trust ourselves to be able to tell them apart in a blind test."
