Phoenix to Get Local News In HDTV
The NBC affiliate in Arizona's largest city will switch to high-def news next month.
By Phillip Swann

Washington, D.C. (October 16, 2006) -- KPNX-TV, the NBC affiliate in Phoenix, will begin broadcasting its local news programs in High-Definition TV next month.

The station, channel 12 in the Phoenix area, will make the switch on November 2, starting with the 10 p.m. news broadcast.

“Whether you have an HD television set or not, our audience will see some breathtaking changes,” John Misner, president and general manager of Channel 12, said in a statement. “You would have to go back to the time when television cameras changed from black and white to color to compare the significance of this change."

KPNX officials say the conversion will include a high-def news helicopter, a new set and new HD graphics.

The channel 12 high-def news will be available on Cox Cable and Qwest as well as over the air via an antenna.

Approximately 20 local stations nationwide are now broadcasting local news programs in HD.
