However, the
group said current 42-inch Plasma models, which make up the
majority of Plasma sales, range from 142-195 watts.
The PDC said Plasma makers have made modifications to their sets
that reduce the amount of energy required when in use. However,
the group said, the state agency is still using the old numbers.
"It's not fair to California consumers or
retailers to have decisions made based on outdated, inaccurate,
and biased facts and figures. TV manufacturers have helped
consumers throughout California and throughout the country to
trim their electricity costs by nearly a third in just the past
two years. Our products are already saving energy, without any
regulation. Yet the California Energy Commission insists on
using old data to justify its over-reaching proposals," said
Plasma Display Coalition President Jim Palumbo.
Palumbo added that a 36-inch analog TV can consume "twice the
energy of a new 42-inch Plasma HDTV."
The Consumer
Electronics Association, a trade group which represents TV
makers and other CE firms, says the current CEC proposal would
ban the sale in California of 25 percent of current big-screen
HDTVs and 100 percent of Plasma sets larger than 60 inches.
The trade group says it would also cost California $50 million a
year in lost tax revenue and eliminate 4,600 jobs.
