Smithsonian HD offers a variety of nature and history-oriented programs, including several featuring exhibits at the Smithsonian Institute.
The channel has also signed carriage deals with DIRECTV, Charter and Verizon's FiOS and it says it will sign more TV providers shortly.
"We welcome RCN to our growing list of new distributors," said Tom Hayden, general manger of the Smithsonian Channel. "This is great momentum for us and we look forward to more announcements in the future."
RCN operates in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, New York City, Boston, and Chicago, among other cities.
