Rear Projection HDTV Sales Up
Consumers looking for larger-screen sets.

That's according to a new study from Pacific Media Associates.
The research firm says that unit sales of rear projection sets saw the highest increase since May 2007, but still represented less than half the sales in January 2007.
The rear projection category has been steadily losing ground to the stylish flat-screen set for more than a year. However, large-screen rear projection HDTVs cost significantly less than comparably-sized flat-panel TVs. (In some cases, the difference is more than $1,000.)
Consequently, some consumers may be opting to buy DLP rear projection sets now so they will have a big-screen TV for the holidays.
Pacific Media reports that the 60-69-inch category had the largest increase in unit sales with 37 percent.
The research firm adds that 90 percent of rear projection unit sales were for 1080p sets, with 95 percent of the revenue coming from that category.
Mitsubishi was the leading seller of rear projection sets with a market share of 38 percent. But the best selling model in October was Samsung's 61-inch HLT6187S, which captured a 10 percent market share.
