Reno's CW
Affiliate Adds HDTV News
The switch was made in part
because the station's owner has a high-def set.

Washington, D.C. (December 16, 2006)
-- KREN, the CW affiliate in Reno, Nevada, will begin
broadcasting its 10 p.m. news program in High-Definition
TV on Monday.
The station is owned by Pappas Broadcasting whose
chairman Harry Pappas happens to live in Reno -- and
owns a "big" high-def set, according to Broadcasting
& Cable magazine. KREN executives tell B&C
that's one reason why they are launching a newscast in
HD.
The newscast will also be the first 10 p.m. news program
in the Reno area, HD or not, and the first newscast of
any kind from KREN. B&C says the 10 p.m. broadcast will
take place in a digital facility in a city shopping
mall.

B&C says KREN will use small $11,000 HDV-format
camcorders from Canon to shoot both in the studio and the field.
“It’s sort of like the paper-bag
test with two bottles of wine,” James Ocon, deputy director of
engineering at Pappas Telecasting Companies and chief engineer
at KREN, told the publication.
“You could put paper bags
over the cameras, and most engineers looking at their monitor
could not tell the difference between the $11,000 camera and a
$50,000 broadcast camera. And I’d much rather buy 10 cameras
than two.”
B&C reports that KRNV, the NBC affiliate in Reno, is also
expected to launch HD news programs this week.
There are approximately 25 stations nationwide that are now
producing the news in HDTV. But the number is growing rapidly.
WLS, the ABC affiliate in Chicago, says it will make the switch
next month. And WRC-TV, the NBC affiliate in Washington, D.C.,
is currently undergoing a studio renovation to make the switch
at an unnamed date.
