Washington, D.C. (December 21, 2006)
-- Toshiba and Canon say viewers won't believe what
they're seeing on their new 'SED' HDTV. However, at this
point, viewers may not see anything at all. At least not
for awhile.
CNET's News.com reports today that the flat-panel SED
(stands for surface conduction electron-emitter display)
will not be on exhibit at next month's Consumer
Electronics Show, despite a previous announcement to the
contrary.
The flat-panel HDTV, which promises a better picture and
possibly a lower price than flat-panels Plasma and LCD,
has been delayed several times.
Toshiba and Canon said in October that a 55-inch SED
would be available in late 2007, but the CES decision
will likely fuel speculation that it won't make that
deadline either.
The two companies have been working on the technology
since 1999 and once said it would be available in 2005.
Canon and Toshiba say
they have invested $200 million to develop production
facilities for the new SEDs.
